Sweetbay Magnolia – Magnolia virginiana
A graceful, multi-stemmed native magnolia perfect for smaller yards and wetter garden spots! Sweetbay produces creamy white, cup-shaped flowers with a sweet lemony fragrance from mid-spring through summer. Its glossy dark green leaves flash a silvery underside in the breeze, adding movement and texture year-round. Semi-evergreen in our area, it typically reaches 15′-20′ tall. Unlike many magnolias, Sweetbay tolerates wet, boggy soil beautifully, making it a great choice for low-lying areas of the garden. Prefers full sun to part shade.
